STEM Education in Ghana. RPM member, Ben Quansah has a dream for his birth country. His wish is, that every student in Ghana will have the same opportunities to study Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) that his students experienced at Baden Powell College, a secondary school in Victoria where he was a teacher.  Working for the Victorian Department of Education, Ben saw Australian students presented with opportunities to study STEM subjects that were unobtainable in Ghana.

The Ghana Government identified the teaching of STEM as an important element in their national education strategy. Ghana is not placed financially to support STEM on a national level. Ben’s NGO, “Brighter and Brighter” has started to fund and develop a pilot STEM program in conjunction with Ben’s university colleagues in Victoria, in-country community leaders, educators such as the   Ghana Education Service (Accra) the Private Basic Schools Network and support from business sponsors in Ghana.

Ben aims to visit Ghana, when possible, with laptops and equipment to begin the project in 6 schools where he already has rooms set aside for computer labs and maker spaces.
This project is in the discussion stage now. We look forward to catching up with Ben and his team in the near future when he can share in more detail, the academic programs that Brighter and Brighter have in store for professional development/teacher training and for the students themselves.
